FACT CHECK: Rand Paul, “Obama running trillion dollar deficit every year”

In Businessweek, Rand Paul told Josh Green:

Rand Paul: You know, the thing is, people want to say [my budget is] extreme. But what I would say is extreme is a trillion-dollar deficit every year. I mean, that’s an extremely bad situation. [more here]

Claim

Rand Paul’s claim is that Obama is running “a trillion-dollar deficit every year”.

Fact Check

According to the Congressional Budget Office, the deficit this year is $642 billion, and it will drop in each of the upcoming years (barring any policy changes) to $560 in 2014 and $378 in 2015.

Verdict

So while Rand Paul did claim Obama was running “a trillion-dollar deficit every year” when in fact it is at $642 and dropping, we rate his statement as Close Enough, because really he’s only off by a measly $400 billion.
